Dobrudja & the Black Sea Coast

One of the oldest Romanian provinces, Dobrudja is a typically rolling steppe and agricultural country. This landscape of woodlands, brackish and fresh water lakes and the Black Sea Coast to the east is renowned for its great richness of birds. From the south to the north and from the west to the east, there are many sites to be explored.

South Dobrudja is well known for excellent birding sites, from steppe lakes to deciduous woods and crag habitats (“canarale”). Ruddy Shelduck, Honey & Long-legged Buzzards, Spotted & Booted Eagles, Red-rumped Swallow, and Black-headed Bunting are among other interesting species.

Lake Techirghiol is the best site of the region for Black-necked Grebe at most seasons, also for Little Gull in summer and early autumn, and White-headed Duck together with Red-breasted Geese in the winter.

Part of the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve, the Razim-Sinoie Lagoon remains the most important wetland bird area in Dobrudja, especially the sites near the shores. Where else in Europe can you stand in one place and scan around to see hundreds of waterbirds including species of pelicans, terns, ducks, gulls, herons and egrets (and geese in winter time) than at Histria? The area around is also extremely rewarding for passerines, while the waders include many pratincoles, the winter geese flocks include Red-breasted Goose, and the European Souslik is a common mammal.

Reputedly one of the best areas in Romania for birds of prey are the forests of Northern Dobrudja. The area holds impressive numbers of Short-toed Eagle, Imperial Eagle, Levant Sparrowhawk, Long-legged Buzzard, warblers, Golden Oriole and species of tit, including Sombre Tit. At the western extremity of the forested Niculiţel Plateau is one of the oldest "mountains" in Europe: The Măcin Ridge. The western craggy section of the ridge known as the Pricopan Peak represents a striking contrast to the habitat of extensive oak and beech forest to the east and the stretches of arable to the west. Saker, Corn Bunting, Rock Thrush, Little Owl, Pied Wheatear, Long-legged Buzzard, Montagu's Harrier and Ortolan are most likely in the area.

Your visit to the region may prove to be the best birdwatching choice!
