Dobrudja & the Black Sea Coast
One of the oldest Romanian provinces, Dobrudja is a typically rolling steppe and agricultural country. This landscape of woodlands, brackish and fresh water lakes and the Black Sea Coast to the east is renowned for its great richness of birds. From the south to the north and from the west to the east, there are many sites to be explored.
South Dobrudja is well known for excellent birding sites, from steppe lakes to deciduous woods and crag habitats (“canarale”). Ruddy Shelduck, Honey & Long-legged Buzzards, Spotted & Booted Eagles, Red-rumped Swallow, and Black-headed Bunting are among other interesting species. Reputedly one of the best areas in Romania for birds of prey are the forests of Northern Dobrudja. The area holds impressive numbers of Short-toed Eagle, Imperial Eagle, Levant Sparrowhawk, Long-legged Buzzard, warblers, Golden Oriole and species of tit, including Sombre Tit. At the western extremity of the forested Niculiţel Plateau is one of the oldest "mountains" in Europe: The Măcin Ridge. The western craggy section of the ridge known as the Pricopan Peak represents a striking contrast to the habitat of extensive oak and beech forest to the east and the stretches of arable to the west. Saker, Corn Bunting, Rock Thrush, Little Owl, Pied Wheatear, Long-legged Buzzard, Montagu's Harrier and Ortolan are most likely in the area. Your visit to the region may prove to be the best birdwatching choice! |
One of the most important region in the country for birds, reptiles, amphibians, butterfly & plant species North Dobrudja: Măcin Mountains – the oldest mountains in the country (Hercynian), Greci Peak – 467 m. South Dobrudja: Plane & dry area, with oasis of forests and “green rocky valleys” - canarale 9 seaside resorts are spread along the Black Sea Coast from N to the S, on a line of 244 km. We recommend:
